Frequently asked questions

The page numbers are a guide to let us know how thick to make your cover.

To insert page numbers in Microsoft Word, select Insert from the top left of your screen.

You should see Page Number in the Header & Footer section. Click this and then select Bottom of Page. Generally you would then select Plain Number 2, which would put the numbers in the centre, or Plain Number 3, which would put the numbers at the right / outside.

To change the appearance of your page numbers, select Insert from the top left of your screen again. Click Page Number again and select Format Page Numbers. You should see the box in the third example. Number format allows you to change your numbers to roman numerals or letters. Page numbering allows you to start your numbering from something other than 1.
If we are printing your thesis for you we use a high quality 120gsm white paper. Every page of every copy is printed, not photocopied, thus guaranteeing the highest quality no matter how many copies you require.
We can print your thesis double sided, if you require this service then put the full amount of pages on the order form and Select double sided printing.

Note: If you are printing double sided please be aware of your formatting. We advise to leave even margins on the page (i.e. 2.5cms on all four margins) This includes putting the page numbers in the middle of the bottom of the page and that you start every new chapter on an odd numbered page (this sometimes means that the previous even numbered page will need to be left blank).
There is an additional information section on our form, in which you may tell us if you would like the university name, school or department etc. placed on the cover or any other requirements from your University regarding the layout. You can also use this section if you require any of the words on your title to be in Italics. Please put the exact words required in the additional information section.
1) Hardbound
Your thesis will be thread-sewn, hardbound in a leatherette cover with gold embossing front and spine

2) Softbound
Your thesis will be Gumbound with a leatherette cover with gold embossing on front cover only.

3) Tapebound
Your thesis will be thermal bound with a clear cover at the front and black card at the back
Your file needs to be in PDF format if we are printing your thesis for you. This type of file will insure that the layout of your thesis remains the same no matter what computer it’s being viewed on. We prefer it to be in one file or as few files as possible.

For more info on how to save as a PDF click here.
We ask for margins of 3 cm on the inside (left) and 2 cm on all other sides. If your college requires larger margins, we recommend following their guidelines, and have no problem printing as per their requirements.

In Microsoft Word, this can be set by selecting Page Layout at the top left of your screen. You should see a small arrow at the bottom right corner of the Page Setup box. This is highlighted in the first example. Click this arrow.

Please see the next example for the standard margins that we recommend. It’s normal to leave the gutter margin as 0 cm. These margins will work perfectly for single sided printing. If you require double sided printing, please see the next tutorial.

Just make sure that you’ve left a binding margin next to any tables, images, and, if possible, appendices.
To set up your margins for double sided printing, select Page Layout at the top left of your screen. You should see a small arrow at the bottom right corner of the Page Setup box. This is highlighted in the first example. Click this arrow.

About half way down the box that pops up, you should see Multiple pages: Normal. This is highlighted in the second example. Click the arrow to the right of Normal and select Mirror margins. You should see that Left and Right in the Margins section have changed to Inside and Outside.

Please see the third example for how the box should look when mirror margins are enabled and the standard margins that we recommend (3 cm on the inside and 2 cm on the others). Just make sure that you’ve selected Whole document at the bottom of this box.
We know most of the layouts for the major Irish universities but for some, there is no standard layout or different layouts for different courses. It’s always best to double check with your college if you’re unsure. We can then meet any specifications you have
If you have been asked by your college to print the body of your thesis on both sides of the page, we can do that for you. You just need to set up your margins accordingly and instructions for doing this in Microsoft Word.
Unfortunately we don’t offer a typing service.
